About Orlando Sanford International Airport
The Orlando Sanford International Airport was originally a military installation called Naval Air Station Sanford. It was commissioned in 1942 and concentrated on land-based patrol plane training. Training shifted to carrier-based fighter aircraft in 1944. In 1969 the City of Sanford took control of the facility.
Today, the airport is serviced by four airlines that offer several domestic and international destinations, as well as three airlines that make inbound charter flights from the United Kingdom. The airport also offers on-site parking; a parking garage and surface lots are available, and a handicap accessible shuttle is available for getting to and from the surface lots. Each terminal has several options for dining and shopping. The international terminal also has a duty free shop.
There are several hotels within ten miles of the airport. The airport offers free shuttle service for three of them. Orlando Sanford International Airport is also a convenient choice to reach the surrounding beaches in the area.
